About Andy Kelly

Andrew “Andy” Kelly, fondly known as “AK” by his friends, was a truly remarkable person whose love for football shaped much of his life. Kind, caring, and endlessly gentle, Andy’s passion for the game extended far beyond playing. This was a lifelong commitment that saw him coaching, mentoring, and watching with unwavering enthusiasm. His excitement was palpable when he set off for America, where he coached with heart and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.

Andy was driven by a quiet determination to better himself in every aspect of life. Whether it was earning his degree, pursuing a master’s, or dedicating himself to his coaching dream, he met every challenge with resilience and focus. His family took immense pride in his achievements, never missing an opportunity to share stories of his journey and his life in America with anyone who would listen.

Though Andy is no longer physically with us, his legacy lives on. His family finds comfort in knowing he had the chance to live out his dream abroad, and they continue to honor his memory by supporting others who share that same ambition. Andy’s spirit endures as a guiding light for those chasing their own dreams, and a reminder of the profound impact one person’s passion and determination can have on the lives of many.

Meet Our Coaches

Meet Coach Nelo

Coach Nelo was the first recipient of support from the Andy Kelly Football First Forum.

At the time of receiving the grant, he was a 20-year-old student at the University of South Wales, studying for a BSc in Football Coaching, Development and Administration. Like many students, he faced financial challenges that could have limited his access to key opportunities within his course.

Through our support, Coach Nelo was able to travel to Washington State in the USA, where he gained valuable coaching experience through an internship with UK International Soccer, further developing his skills and knowledge within the game.

Coach Nelo shared, “Football has always provided me a feeling of direction… and I want to be able to offer that same stability and inspiration to others.”

He also said, “Receiving support from Andy Kelly’s Football First Forum provide[s] me with much-needed steadiness during a critical stage of my journey. It help[s] relieve the financial struggles caused by travel and my visa expenses, allowing me to focus fully on completing my degree and continuing to gain valuable coaching and life experience in the US.”

Meet Coach Dernel

Coach Dernel is currently studying for a Master’s degree in Leadership in Sport at the University of South Wales while continuing to develop as a football coach in Seattle, Washington. Alongside his studies, he is gaining valuable coaching experience, expanding his knowledge, and working towards a career in football and sport. Coach Dernel shared the financial challenges he has faced growing up, particularly as his mother is deaf and unable to work. He explained that these circumstances have created significant financial pressures, making it difficult at times to fully focus on both his studies and coaching development.

Speaking about his application, Coach Dernel said:

“I reached out to Andy Kelly’s Football First Forum because football and education have both provided opportunities that have helped me progress despite difficult personal and financial circumstances growing up. Completing my Master’s degree while gaining coaching experience in the United States is giving me valuable life experience, leadership development, and opportunities that will help my future career within football and sport. I believe the support from Andy Kelly’s Football First Forum would make a genuine difference in helping me continue pursuing those academic and professional goals.”

Testimonials

“Firstly, what an amazing idea and charity[.] Andy was a such a great person and loved his time in the US. I spent a lot of time with Andy throughout the degree, both here in Cardiff and in California – it was always fun when he was around[.] As course leader of the degree, I saw Andy grow and develop during the programme, he was always supportive of his fellow classmates and new students/coaches in the years below him, so this is such a great tribute to continue this mantra and legacy. “
